Last Tuesday, the 17th of November, marks the 1 year anniversary of the day that my friend and I (a different friend - not Jessie) first found Lauryn Marie's channel and subscribed to it! Lauryn is still my favorite artist a year later and I thought it would be fitting to commemorate the occasion by covering another one of her songs! (I can't believe it's been a whole year! 😯) This song - The Optimist - is the sequel / sister song to The Fear, which I covered back in May of this year. The Optimist means quite a bit to me right now because lately I've found myself in the same position that it was written from. The world has been so full of evil men, immorality, and corruption lately that I've found it difficult to know how to encourage friends - and frankly I've been feeling like the situation is little hopeless myself. But praise God that we know Who wins in the end and it ain't the enemy! More info about the backstory below. :) The story of how this cover came about is a pretty crazy one: I saw Lauryn play The Optimist on a livestream a couple weeks back (sound familiar?) and when she tuned her guitar, I was able to figure out what tuning she originally wrote it in (just like The Fear!). From there, it was pretty simple to finish transcribing what she played (chords linked below!) and then begin the arrangement process for my cover.
From start to finish, this project was completed in record time. It took me a little over a week to transcribe the song fully and learn to play it smoothly. Then it's taken me another week to put this video / recording together. That's less than half the total time I spent on my cover of The Fear! I had originally hoped to post this on the 17th proper, but that didn't happen for obvious reasons. It took me long enough that I didn't even make my normal posting time on Friday! I don't usually release on Monday, but I just couldn't wait to share this one with you all. I'd like to give out a huge thanks to my friend Jess for collaborating with me on this project! We've wanted to work on a song together for a long time and I'm happy that we finally managed to pull it off. I'm really impressed with what she was able to come up with considering our crazy time crunch and everything that's been going on lately. It wouldn't have been the same without her wonderful harmonies. You guys can can find her channel linked below. She hasn't uploaded any videos yet, but I know she's planning to make some covers in the future (and we already have some more collab plans in the works!) and I can guarantee you that they'll be excellent so you should consider subscribing! :D Lastly, if you don't already follow Lauryn (the writer of this song!) and her music, you're SERIOUSLY missing out! As I said before, she's my favorite artist at the moment and it always impresses me how she's able to write not only complex arrangements of the music itself, but also lyrics that hit home every. single. time. Everything she does is well worth checking out. SUBSCRIBE to Lauryn here! My Transcription of this song on Ultimate Guitar Subscribe to Jessie Here!
